This piece of Holly is from a log that was left outside open to the elements for about ten months, about three foot long.
Then it was brought into the shop and cut into slabs with the pith taken out, sealed and left to dry a little for about three months.
It was then cut into blanks ready to turn, and this is the result.
It is still wet so have turned it thin and will expect it to move.
So far the blanks i have cut up haven't got any splits, which is a problem with Holly so this is a little trial and error to see how it goes.
It turned lovely and gave a great finish. :D
Hope you like it.
Size is 10" dia x 5-1/2" tall.Finished with Danish Oil.

Very nice !

I think holly's boring reputation has been blown last couple of days !

Thank you for the comments.
Yes Jon it is light weight and still drying,so will have to keep fingers/toes,and anything else crossed that this one doesn't split.
I have quite a bit of Holly and have enjoyed turning the few pieces i have so far but they have all split quite bad. They were green.
So just trying something different with it :D

Try turning it really thin as in 2 or 3 mm using a light as it can distort dramatically and be really funky (or weird depending on your taste for that sort of thing)
