ok so the last couple of days has been all about sharpening. I have weighed up all the information and I think I am nearing a solution.

The Robert Sorby Deluxe Sharpening Jig looks good to me and is fairly priced. But I'm wondering if I even need the platform bit of it? I already have a platform and I could probably make one. I'm also going to make the Wolverine type, pull-out arm for gouges. So will that and just the fingernail profiler, be ok?

I'm not missing something with the deluxe/platform version that I need am I?

Hi Wizer,

I have the Sorby setup but if you already have an adjustable platform and are going to use the Wolverine for gouges then presuming the Wolverine lets you do fingernail grinds, the Sorby will not add much to your capability.

I have bought the additional table with the guide slot but am making my own jigs to fit. I am very happy with the Sorby setup, like everything it is practise that brings the best results.

Regards,

Mike C

Wizer. Ihave the Sorby fingernail setup which is No.445 to upgrade to the full system (which I did not) you just need No. 447 after that tou can buy bits and pieces for Skew and whatever you want to pay.
I was useing the K.Rowley system which you can easily make and you can make your jigs for whatever you need to sharpen. You could probley do fingernail if you put your mind to it.
Three years ago I was sharpening on a belt sander which I stood on end and held in a B&D workbench at that time Sorby were saying that their system was the way to go with a grinder and and stones. What are they selling now??. All the Best my friend . REgards Boysie

Whilst cash is tight at the moment, I do want a proper commercial jig. If I have to make one or go freehand then it will slow down my turning production and that's what I want to focus on.

Eugene: I take it you sharpen your standard grind gouges in a freehand fashion against the platform?

Wizer

I have been using the Sorby jig in its entirety for about 18 months now and find it a wonderful piece of kit, would thoroughly recommend it 8) 8)

Tom,
If you are going to use the Wolverine setup on the Sorby you will need the varigrind part of the jig to do a fingernail grind.
Actually the jig looks indentical to the tormek one for gouges.
So whichever is the cheapest? :p

Why not get the fingernail jig and upgrade to the rest later if you need them. Thats what I did (and I didnt upgrade yet!) and am very happy with the set-up. At first I found it a bit fiddly to get the gouge in the jig so that it was properly aligned with the wheel's surface but you get used to it. And I made my own spindle gouge platform using some ply - pretty easy if you want to do it yourself.

I made a wolverine clone and it works fine for gauges and skew chisels. I also made a jig for fingernail figuration grinds. Chj did plans for the fingernail jig some time back,I adapted it to fit on the clone so I can do all my sharpening on homemade jigs. (I am a Yorkshire man after all) I really do recommend the wolverine by the way

The wolverine looks the easiest to make. Isn't it just an arm that pulls out and locks at any length? I know they do a stone dresserr and an attachment for skews. But you'd still need a fingernail profiler wouldn't you? I wonder if you could use the Wolverine fingernail profiler in your own pull out arm arrangement?

Further research tells me that you need to but 2 fingernail profilers from Wolverine to do all sizes. :-k £80

Seems expensive. :?

If you have the Sorby fingernail 445 gettwo pieces of box section about 30/40cm inlenght one piece which will fit into the other one so that they will slide smoothly. thake the Sorby F/N out of its bracket (undo the set screw) .Clanp the box section under your grinding wheel with the smaller one able to extend out drill a few 7/8mm holes in the small piece on the top side and grind off as much of the Stem bottom as needed to seat in the holes and you have a fingernail grinding jig. Simple. REgards Boysie
