I've been out looking for firewood for next year and just missed out on this little lot. Someone got some nice spalted beech to burn. They were about 2' in ø and would have made some nice turned stuff.

Not only nice looking wood for turning but also for flat work where the spalting can look good in door panels or table tops etc if you like that kind of work. I do on some things. Most likely not the wood a traditional woodworker like yourself would reach for first. 😉

I'll have to admit to being a bit of a decorative wood philistine.

Substance over surface !
 
Spalting should take paint well. Best thing to do with it IMHO.
