Hi,

I posted a similar thread in general woodworking but I feel like this would be a better place for it.

Essentially I'm tired of working in a dingy, dusty stone shed and would like to kit my workshop out to look a little more professional. After I've painted the inside white, I'll get to work building some storage.

Most of all I could do with a proper bench on which I can put my bench grinder, bandsaw, future drill press and do some basic hand tool work on. I'll probably build in some storage underneath it, and shelves or maybe a peg board behind it to hang my tools and store some bowl blanks.

I'd like to build this as cheaply as possible but I'm really not sure as to what kind of materials would be most cost effective. I envisioned plywood and pine, however all the big stores seem way too expensive for something that might be ripped out when I move out. I've never worked with MDF and have no real idea of it's properties, could I do it with this? Under £100 would be good, ideally less, and I'd want to build it out of materials that I can comfortably fit in a hatchback with the back seats down. That might mean coming up with a cutting list and getting them to cut it in store.

What size work bench are you thinking? Have you got loads of space, or are you limited at all ?

18mm plywood IMO is a great cost/quality compromise. Even B&Q do some sheets at £26 (?) for 2.4 x 1.2m, you could get 4 of those for your £100 (ish) and that should be plenty to build some storage and very strong. Half my workshop is built out of the stuff (that and 3 x 2 PAS timber - also excellent value) and IMO it's great for kitting out a workshop.

Where are you located? There is a company in London who sell 8x4 sheets of ply for £8 a sheet.

They are packing crates so you might have to remove some nails but they should be suitable for workbench tops

There's a really good workbench design here:

I built a variation of this using 3x3s, 2x3s and some MDF and ply bought from Wickes. It all went in the back of my car and probably cost a bit more as I bought cut sheets of MDF instead. Reckon it cost me around £60 for the wood and its rock solid.

Looks like that's going to be the one. Thanks.

Now to convince the girlfriend to let me spend the bank holiday weekend building it.
