So a while back I asked my Dad if Grandad would have any woodworking tools. Dad reckoned he wouldn't. Anyway recently I was being nosy while visiting and saw a couple of chisels and a few bags. So when I was up last weekend Dad and I asked nicely and took a bit more of a look at what was there. Much more than Dad thought was the answer. All neatly wrapped up in plastic bags (well oiled) and not touched in the past 20 plus years. Well the chisels might have been used from time to time, but the rest of it?

So here are a few pics. Here is the saw. It's a nice 7 point crosscut disston.

Record no 4 smoother. I don't know if this is Grandad's. It's pretty old. I'll take a pic with the frog off and post, but it's the old solid type. Might be my great grandads.

This is the odd one. For some reason Grandad has a no 10 plane. He wasn't a carriage maker... No number 5 tho, which I sorta thought it was when first taking it up out of bag. Not sure what'll use it for.

Stanley no 80 cabinet scraper. Could be handy for the worktop that I'm doing at the moment.

Some clamp heads. Again, dead handy.

There are some other tools still there, but he didn't want me to have them. Apparently he needs them. But he's 91 years old, so I can't imagine that'll actually happen. I don't want to do him out of tools, but as Dad puts it they're just sitting there rusting slowly. Honestly tho, these are going to go in the tool box and have pride of place. I don't know how much he knows how much it means to me to have them, but my hip flask from my other grandad is one of my most treasured possessions, so these will be keepers.

Well done and they will serve you well. Nice to have family tools to pass down the generations. :)

Looking at the saw and scraper, you could almost mistake them for NOS tools. ;)

The only one that's got a decent amount of use is the no 4, which is why I don't think it's gramps. The others have probably only been used a handful of times. The cabinet scraper is from the late 80s and I'm sure it's never been used.

Lovely that mate. Now, I wonder if I could use the excuse of future heirloom to justify buying a Veritas or LN scraper plane to Mrs N?

Very nice!! I had got some of my Grandad's tools off my Mum a while ago, including a very good rip saw. It wasn't totally straight forward though, the conversation went something like this:

"Can I have those tools?"
"ooo, I'm not sure I may need them".
"errrm what for?"
"well I don't know, but they may come in handy"
"Mum, you're 72, you've never made anything out of wood in your life, and you have a bad back. I'm a cabinet maker, I do woodwork every day, and they would be really useful and nice to have."
"Well, yes, but I still think I may need them."

Persistence pays, I got them in the end. Don't think she misses them!

It is nice to have this sort of thing. My family on my Dad's side were mostly woodworkers of one sort or another, we traced it going back to a family of Sawyers in Devon in the early 1700s. For some reason my Dad never got those genes, and I never actually met my Grandad as he died before I was born, so those few tools are the only tangible connection between my woodworking forebears and me. Means a lot.....

I like the Record No.04 plane. Nice! It's the "stay-set" model which is a better plane than the standard.

Hopefully you can convey to him that you will treasure the old tools he's given you - but even if you can't, you can always remember him when you use them.

I have an old plane I got from my ex-FIL. I think kindly of him every time I see it (even though I divorced his daughter some 20 years ago  ). And I bought a brand new Clifton with inheritance money from mum, it reminds me of her.

Cheers, Vann.

I have a tendon saw of my fathers. Almost threw it away then I realised it was the only thing of his I had so I kept it and use it. Handle wobbles just a little but it cuts well.

My dad died when I was six. He was an engineer, and I still have some of his measuring tools. It's a great joy to own them, and have part of him still with me .Treasurers those tools mate and he will live with you for ever.

Nor am I, but my 'carriage plane' (actually a Record 10 1/2) comes in very useful for other things too. Personally, I don't understand why they are so scarce. Eg. working the borders of panels and cleaning up large rebates, both of which I'll be doing some of in the next week or so.

Anyway, glad to see that some of your granddad's tools will be able to do their stuff again. Enjoy them. I have a few of my granddad's too, which still get used. Although long-since deceased, he's always in my thoughts when I'm using them.

Very strange this topic has come up now. I was also at my father's yesterday he's also 91 and had his own building company until he retired at 65. I know he has a load of tools in his garage and he said to me yesterday to take what I want. Well I had a quick look but there is so much in there it's going to take a day to sort it all out. I put a few things together like a few old wood moulding planes a large wooden jack plane and a few other bit's and bobs which are still in the back of the car at the moment so when I get it all out I'll grab a few pictures and update this post.

Grayo - I wish that was how it had went with my Grandad, he wasn't that keen. But he's *very* cantankerous about everything these days.

Marcus - That sounds like a familiar conversation.

Vann - cool. I used it last night and noticed the different cap on it. Two pieces like the modern Clifton ones. Can't say I could tell the difference, but I now have 3 no 4s.

.

That is interesting, I saw some time ago, a discussion on why the carriage makers planes were so plentiful, given that they were on the large side for the majority of rebating jobs, where a shoulder plane would have been more suitably sized.

If you ever decide that the #10 is of no use to you, I can offer it a good home in my growing collection :)

Heh. It's a keeper, I just can't see me using it often. My collection is getting bigger as well it's now up to:

Record Stay Set no 4
Stanley no 4
Modern Stanley no 4
Stanley no 5 1/2
Stanley no 10
ECE Scrub

Am I your Grandad?

Hahaha. I suspect that 'cantankerous' applies to a lot of us on here...

Just a few of my collection which I rescued from my dad's garage on Sunday. There's also a tool chest of old tools that my nephew has got his hands on for some reason but after a phone call discovered they were in the back of his shed on the floor. They are now on there way to me lol.
