I'm sure this question must have been asked before.....

Is it possible to buy solid wood in 1/4in, 3/8in and 1/2in thickness commercially or is it necessary to by thicker and have a jointer or thicknesser and then join to create width etc. I've used laminated ply and mdf to good effect but there are plenty of projects which demand solid wood.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated by this relatively inexperienced scroller in Weston Super Mare

Thanks

Thanks gents for your prompt replies.

I have ordered some from British Hardwoods for now as it seemed better value, and will get me going. Still expensive with postage but convenient for now. I think a jointer/thicknesser might put in an appearance soon. (Yes dear, it was very cheap!!)

Old furniture that no one wants often provides some decent timber to use, especially drawers etc. Every thing I make comes from recycled materials and stuff people chuck out.
only last week I was given an old dressing table, it was only pine but has rendered some very useful timber which has already been 'processed' . :)

As above. Recycle.

If I had to buy wood I'd have a different hobby.

As Brian said, maybe worth checking out to see if there is a timber yard local to you.

I purchase all of my hard woods by the pallet load of off cuts, from a timber yard that supply boat builders and furniture makers, what is off cuts to them is very usable timber to me.

For example most of the off cuts are in the region of a meter long by various widths/thicknes.

Take care.

Chris.

As above, scrap bits from your local timber merchant or workshop can be a great win-win for both parties.
