I was at the Hitchin flea market on Friday and picked up "a couple of old rulers" for a quid. They were lovely old mahogany winding strips with dovetailed boxwood contrast marks. Unfortunately some philistine tried to plane off the owner's marks (Mr C. McVicar) on one side of the lower one with a lousy plane and made a right mess of it. I managed to scrape it flat to almost bare wood, and applied three rubs of garnet shellac. When dry I threw my house keys at it a few times followed by a few yards of chain dropped from a height, then followed up with some Liberon patinating black wax. I think there is not too much difference now...

Jarviser,

Go on then complete the gloat by saying that you where paid to take them home as the sell took pity on you!

They do look useful, well done in rescuing them. :D

No, but when I took them out of the £1 box and said "is it £1 for the pair" he said "are they a pair? I suppose so."
I have used them, but as the shed is only 8 foot long I have to stand outside!
