Ok guys, now this is my first post in the lathe forum. IE I know nothing about lathes.

I have a very small workshop (single garage) and want a small lathe for turning small (obviously) components.

So what machine would you recommend? I don't mind buying used if you get a better machine, but it most be easily lifted, as it will have to spend most of its time under the workbench.

Also, what about chisels (or whatever they're called!). Recommendations for a first set? And what about an introductional DVD?

I had a go at turning when I was at school, and it scared the cr@p out of me!

Hope you can help.

Cheers

Karl

I use a Jet mini and can turn up to 9" dia and about 18" long on it. The Axminster equivalents have a good review as well.

Hi Karl .........
Probably the best purchase you can make for under twenty quid...
( relative to Turning anyway .. )

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Woodturning-Fou ... 1861081146

Available in many places of course, not just Amazon ...
A read of this will save hours of heartache !
Its considered to be 'the bible' ... or at least, "The Gospel According to St.Keith"

Best of luck with your endeavours - look forward to seeing some examples once you get up and going !

Hi Karl,

If, like me, you know virtually nothing about turning, try to get an experienced forum member to give you a few lessons. Paul (Chisel) kindly gave me some lessons and after a couple of hours (having never turned anything before) I was able to produce this

It really was time well spent and it demonstrates what the different types of turning tools do :D

Still haven't got a lathe though :(

Cheers

Hi Karl,
If you havent got a lathe yet I know of one available for sale in Chester.
Its a Fox and its about a year old, cost £180 new and the chap is looking for £60! yes only £60.
It belongs to the Secretary of our woodturning club and is in super condition. Hes just got a new mini Record variable and its got to go.
Drop me a note if youre interested and I will give you his details.
Regards, Bill
