Hi Col. That looks interesting.
I've seen something similar before where you angle the cut slightly when cutting but please correct me if I'm wrong !
When you pull up the outside piece, the rest follows upwards until the angle cut of each layer locks with the one below and makes a bowl shape.

I am looking forward to your progress with this project as a keen follower.

I'm guessing you're thinking of the ones where a spiral is cut at an angle. I cut one of Steve Good's like that but I got the angle very slightly wrong so the bowl was too shallow. I also cut one of SG's that's similar to Col's, except you cut two and join them to make them into a vase. I never finished it as it was far too musc sanding for me.

Keep these plans coming Col, they are giving me incentive to get back into scrolling rather than just talking about it. :mrgreen:

Hi Martin. Please don't make my brain work too hard this time of night LOL !
Having never made something like 'Col's Bowl lol' (excuse the intended poetry), I can only recall things I've seen on the net.
You maybe right about a spiral cut but Col's design doesn't show a spiral so I am now at a total loss as to what to think !
Hmmm, maybe I should post earlier in the evening when the Lager hasn't taken effect. :roll:

The cutting angle is probably on Col’s sketch up plan, but if not the formula for setting the table angle is :-

X = ring width
Y = wood thickness
a = angle of table drop

x/y = tan a
or
x/y = tangent of the angle of the table drop.

Formula is from Carole Rothman’s book “Wooden Bowls” (isbn 978-56523-433-8)

This formula works, I have used it and successfully made bowls. Only warning there is a lot of sanding required, Carole Rothman uses a large bobbin sander, which makes life easier, but I suspect like me, very few of you have access to such a tool.

Carole Rothman’s book is excellent if you want to start making bowls with the scroll saw.

Oooh a Bobbin Sander!

One of those is on my wish list, along with far too many other Gucci items.

My missus will kill me when I extend the shed (again) to fit everything in
