I've noticed that Preston Ovoloe shaves come in different sizes, the most common seeming to be 5/8".

My question is: to what exactly does the size refer, a dimension of the tool or a dimension of the wood it is to cut?

The convention for sash work is that the size is the thickness of the finished moulding bar. So your 5/8 shave or plane would work a bar from a rectangular section 5/8" thick. It would probably be 2" the other way.

Thanks for the reply Andy. I have difficulty visualising geometry. Does what you have written mean that the ovolo which a 5/8 shave cuts is considerably less than 5/8 wide simply because one has started from a piece of wood which itself is 5/8 wide?

Pop over to Gary's excellent blog at Hackney Tools here - http://hackneytools.com/2014/10/english ... id-nelson/ - download the handy guide to sash planes and have a read. It's a fascinating rabbit hole to explore!
Andy,

thank you very much indeed. That hits the nail on the head and the diagrams are just what I needed to understand it.

Thanks again.
