Six months in, and really enjoying every attempt - some of which seem to be more successful than others, its fair to say.... I thought perhaps I could show you some of my efforts and perhaps ask for some pointers and advice on how I can maybe seek to improve .

The goblet is my first effort at one, and I found it quite a challenge, but a lot of fun.

The goblet is Ash,
The small bowl beside it is West African Mahogany
The Candleholder has a Goncolo Alves base & Ash top
The paler fruitbowl is Tulipwood
and the darker shallow bowl is Black American Walnut.

Of everything that I've tried... I find the Tulipwood the nicest to work, whether thats 'as it should be' or perhaps more likely to be 'ham-fistedness' on my part, is much more open to interpretation :)

Its all great fun, I hope that I'm learning as I go... and it is immensely satisfying, and a great way to 'de-stress' after the rigours of a normal working day, which I guess is great for the blood-pressure and the soul ! 8)

Any comments and pointers would be very very welcome. ...
thanks, everyone, and all the best .

Alun.

Nice work - plenty of variety in timbers and shapes, and the finish on all of them looks particularly good.
Personal favourite is the walnut bowl (it just looks lovely and warm),closely followed by the goblet.

Keep enjoying it,and keep posting the results :D

All pieces look very nice Alun :D though with the size of piccy is difficult to see the finish.Just keep turning enjoying and posting :D

A worthy little collection Alun.

That alone makes the experience 100% worth while.

Just found time for some fun... made this in Spalted beech. I was quite pleased with it, thought I'd 'show' .... opinions / comments, as always very gratefully received :D

( Sorry, the pic's not very 'level'... ! it is the pic, not my turning, on this occasion ! )

It was a horror to hollow out.... got there in the end !

Wow  what fantastic figuring :D

For me,the base looks too heavy (could have done with the stem being thinner) beautiful piece of timber though, and love the little delicate bead.Finish also looks very good.

Nice chunky sort of medieval look to it Jenx. personally I like these sort of things. Lovely wood and the finish looks good too. If I wanna be picky perhaps have the stem a bit thinner? Personal taste perhaps.

Managed a good finish on an awkward wood specimen Alun, and you achieved the object of showing off the figuring, my preference would have been for a slimmer base, maybe because I prefer fine glassware as opposed to chunky pottery or heavy crystal in beakers and goblets.

Thanks gents ! Yes, I agree about the base.. it caused me a bit of a dilemma... I didn't want to lose any of the markings in the wood and was a bit scared they'd end up on the shavings pile, if I went much slimmer, so err'd on the side of caution a little in an attempt to keep the features in the piece.

Paul - I get most of my wood from Aberdeenshire Hardwoods, as he's about 4 miles from home, and is such a super lad to deal with... he knows I'm just starting out, and is very helpful and encouraging, evey time I nip in to see him.
He usually has quite an extensive amount of spalted beech available.... If you were looking for a specific size - let me know and I'll ask Colin for it and send it to you, if that helps !

:D :D :D :D 8)
