Hi all

I'm planning on building some sort of tool carrier/box over christmas to keep in the van for the odd occasion that i'm on site. it needs to be easy to carry and hold a basic tool kit with the possibility of a top to use as a step/sawhorse/lunch seat. I've seen the odd picture on here before but cant find them. does anyone have any ideas or pictures of there site boxes for some inspiration?

Many thanks

After reading the toolbox book by Jim Tolpin in the late nineties it inspired me to make a site toolbox and this is what i came up with.

More than 60 main tools live in the box and with small stuff like drill bits screw bits orgers this takes it to well over 100.

After about fifteen years hard labour it has proved to be pretty bomb proof.I have changed the top once and the ash feet a couple of times. The main box is made from 18mm marine ply biscuit and screws and the top is oak.It makes a great saw bench ,hop up, door buck and you always have some ware to sit and have a cuppa .After a while i soon fond that i could find most of the tools without looking .cheers Bern

Being too lazy to make one I just use a Stanley rolling tool chest. Nice and big, but not too heavy as it's plastic not timber/mdf and can be properly locked and padlocked, quite important on a couple of the sites I've been on :?

Sorry for the double post but heres some more boxes.
This box dosnt get out much these days mainly use it for hanging doors.

Just taken a look at your website , very impressed with your site and work . Quite a diverse range didnt expect to see a timber framed building along side kitchens windows doors and stairs. My toolbox will be a doddle for you but heres a few design tips that make sense .

Height - from the floor to the back of your knee.

Width- 12'' to make it stable for standing and sawing on.

Length-24'' inside ,long enough for a jack cut saw

Cheers Bern. :D

I'm hardly one to make a comment based on your website Murdoch, but the only thought I'd add to bern's sitebox (if I may be so bold); to make access to everything a bit simpler, make make an inner pullout, that hides an area in the bottom for flat things rather than go to the extra effort of making drawers.

Hinge the "seat" with a latch to keep it down to lift by or if you made the handle in the insert longer it could come through the seat to lift the whole thing.

That way you could use it as a bench / seat and still use the tools without having to stop to get anything out.

Just a thought...

Interesting suggestion there but it sounds a little fiddly and i dont think you would gain much .Most of the tools in the first box have really easy access although you do have to bend to get them. When i first made the box i was able to pull tools out whilst standing on it ,i cant do that any more mind as i have knackered knees {motorbike crashes more titanium than the bionic man}.

I hope Murdoch will show us what he comes up with .

Cheers Bern.
