A while ago I bought one of these letter and number stamping tools:

because I thought it would be nice, having made something for somebody, to stamp their initials and the year on it. The tool worked well although the bit holder causes the bit to strike the wood with quite a bit of force which can sometimes mar the effect. Last night however, I managed to make it slip out of my hand and as a result it was unusable.
I thought for about 30 seconds and realised I could use a small hammer to hit the bits. What an improvement! I can employ much less striking force with the hammer thus getting just the right degree of impression and (here's the real bonus) using the hammer is loads quicker because you don't have to faff around mounting the bits in the tool. Obvious when you think about it. So how come I never thought about it?
