Doesn't matter where they're manufactured. It only matters to what spec the factory is asked to work to. That's totally in Stanley's control. The Chinese can/could work to Holtey specs (and on a lot larger scale) if you requested it and were willing to pay for it.

Absolutely! China are at the forefront of manufacturing http://www.scmp.com/tech/enterprises/ar ... s?page=all .

Speaking with a client of ours who deals with Chinese businesses there are many good things going on. They deal with three factories, two in China and one in the UK. In recent audits the UK factory was worse, operating national minimum wage workers with skills shipped in instead of working with the local community. Factory was grim but all was legal.

In China one was a massive factory that was much better than the UK in every regard. The other one was smaller employing 200 and was the hub of the community. It was by all accounts fantastic.

It makes me larf when folk talk in poor terms of China (not folks here but in a broad sense of people I speak to). We should reflect on why we were not able to take long term choices to enable manufacturing to stay here rather than taking a pop at China.

In my experience with Quality Control both here and overseas, the quality of the product is only as good as the Quality Controller, and if he just sits in his office signing off the QC sheets without doing any checking then the standards are at risk of being poor.

Has anyone tried the Rider badged line, recently introduced By Axminster?
Price for a No. 4 seems to be £60-70, so rather more than £26 or so, but less than Quansheng/Woodriver. I had quick look at one of these in their store, yesterday. The finish to the sole and sides seemed to be quite good, although I wasn't able to check for flatness, but the inner faces (which don't matter anyway) seemed rough and coated with tarmac.
Brass lever cap, quite reasonably finished, brass adjustment wheel, and strip metal yoke.
The demonstrator seemed quite smooth in adjustment.

Is this range likely to fit the bill for an entry level plane, which works reasonably out of the box?

I have a Rider block plane which I rate.

Perfect from the box.

Heard others weren't so lucky, some find it heavy but I'm a big chap so like the weight.

Bedrock I saw a review on YT and it seemed ok. I wonder if some funds could of been directed away from adding a nice presentation box and etching on the side and spent on lever rather than screw cap. Not that it matters I suppose.

It'll be interesting to hear what users think over time.

Curious to know if the side are perpendicular to the sole, I once tried using a Homebase special to square up an edge using a shooting board, sides were approaching 5deg out of true.
