I believe I saw something similar in a local pine shop for £90! So guess what? And how many more of you have seen something and thought - "HOW MUCH!? I could make one for next to nowt!" That's what I did, and here's the result for the grand sum of £13.00! 8) . All criticism greatly received!

Hi Mark

£90 might sound expensive, but how long did it take you to make yours? Once you've totted up the cost of your labour you might have a better idea of how the vendor came to his price.

Nice table, though :) .

Gill

Mind you tho, I have seen furniture in the DIY stores and the price is lower than buying timber for the same item yourself.

Compliments on the table.

I do not know what prices are like in other area's, but more and more these days the wife and I say "You couldn't buy the timber for that price"

Nice Table

Edit, DW you got there just before me.

Cheers

Mike

So thats £90 minus £13 materials, = £77
Labour to make and paint estimate, 5hrs thats works out at £15/hr, no pro shop could survive on that rate.
That doesn't take into account overheads, etc.
To be honest I thought £90 was cheap. I think to call your post "side table rip off" is a bit harsh, especially for the pros on the site".

I heard on the news the other day that the average income is now £22.000 that means its approaching £100 per day (5 day week plus hols.) without overheads, Why was I born to early.

Sorry Obeone - the "rip off" part was intended to mean me ripping off a table to make!! I have the upmost respect for the pros on this site and all power to anyones elbow who can make decent money from making furniture. Absolutely no digs were meant. Apologies once again to anyone who thought I was berating furniture makers. I should have worded the posting better as you rightly pointed out; it is misleading.

I saw an article in the papers earlier this year that said it was £26,000

Andrew (from the underpaid North :( )

Average income is misleading, for example if the average wage is £20,000 then the lowest wage, £0, is £20,000 under the average, however the city whizz kid may earn £5,000,000, this vastly increases the average wage.
I think the average wage based on the middle 80% of earners is about £18,000

I'm inclined to agree with Obeone on this.
The disparity with high and low is too great and taking an average using this method is not a fair way of calculating.
Just ask the nurses, teachers etc.

A bit like lying down with your head in the freezer and feet in the oven, and saying that, on average, you are comfortable!

Can you tell me where you bought the mateirals for £13.00 please?

I have not been able to buy that much wood for anything like that money for the past 15 years - not to mention the glue, screws and paint you must have used.

That's why the usual average wage statistics are median values rather than mean values.

Tony - I'm maybe not being totally honest, but the majority of the table was made with a pack of 4, 2.4m - 1.25' x 1.25' at a cost of £9.78p (cheap????) from a local - The Lakes, DIY store. The rest - dowelling etc was what I was given. Probably did cost more than 13 smackers come to think of it! :?
