Having made a similar one which my Daughter took into her office in the Uni... the lady who works on the reception there asked her ( my daughter ), if her dad would make one similar...

Got 'to it' this moring, so that my daughter can deliver it tomorrow on returning to work ...

so its done ! :

They're not very complex turnings, very simple really .. but they work in the "functional" sense ... and i tried a little inlay on the face of this one, in the same rosewood that the base is made from, just to try it.

This then, is Clock # 3 :D

Beech face, with rosewood base and inlay.

Despite it's simplicity.. I was reasonalbly pleased with the outcome. :)

Thats a nice little clock Jenx 8) 8) Very effective contrast of woods, I like it very much. And an inlay  well done, how ever do you do that?
Only thing and your gonna kick yourself.......Why didn't you line up the grain on the inlay with the grain on the face ? (just the sort of thing I would do and then look later and think 'bugger' #-o ) Still thats nothing and it really is a cool little clock :D

JT

That is very effective. The turning may be simple as you put it but design wise it looks clean and functional and the woods work well together. Having the basic clock instead of a full face works well with it.

Pete

Very nice, everything about it just works well together :D

Andrew (who would also like to know where the kit was from..)

Allen / Andrew - I got the Motors ( hands come free ) and the chapter ring from www.clockparts.co.uk
Good prices, good service and real easy to buy from.

I think there's a lot of choice to get clock components on the web...
but they were certainly very nice to deal with  :D
HTH.

Thanks for the comments... JT you're right about the grain alignment ! :D The inlay went in, before I'd chosen how to orientate the face, and the mistake was made ! I will know for next time 8) 8) :D

I like the job you've done Alun, was going to mention the grain alignment, but you've sussed it. As you say, it won't happen again.

Alun, A super bit of work looks perfect for a present, who ever it's for should be well pleased.
Ment to ask before how is your Dad getting on with his lathe, everything going well I hope. REgards Boysie.

Very very nice, great turning and finish, something else to try sometime,
this never ending hobby!!! well done 8)

Very Nice Jenx !

I might have to steal that layout for an upcoming club comp - if you don't mind that is !

You carry on, Loz ! ... "clockparts" is good for the bits .. fine and cheap too. Be great to see your version of a similar clock ! :D :D :D :D

Boysie - my dad ended up not taking the lathe from me... he's really into his carving, and has only a little shed 6x4, so he said the 'mess' would end up irritating him ! Fair enough I suppose.. and its better he "said" , than just let me carry on sending it, for it not to get used.
He's still got that dreadful thing he got from e-bay, but i doubt it'll see much use... he seems to be really happy doing his carvings, so I didn't push him into something he maybe didn't have his heart fully in.
So I've still got the wee CCSL ...
My old man isn't keeping so well just now, he's got diabetes like me... but he's also got angina, had some stents put into his arterys somewhere at the heart area, a ruined hip which he 'could' go and get fixed but he's putting it off and he fell, playing bowls last week and has a knee about 3 times the size of what it should be
'Daft auld bu**er' he is ... what annoys him most is that he played a high standard of football back home in wales, boxed quite well during his national service in the Artillery, and now he's got all these illnesses !.. he's getting on a bit.. 77 just past, and as he says - he went nearly all his life without a serious illness.. so having a couple now seems to have surprised him ! :)
He's a long way from me, down in Devon... so I cant just 'nip round'... but my mother keeps him largely 'under control' :D
Its funny.. i suppose like most lads, I just think of him as 'my da' .. the bloke that could make everything right, whenever I got it wrong, as a kid. -- you just don't imagine him having 'fallabilities' , i suppose :D
I sometimes don't give him the credit I should... His mother died when he was 10, and his father went completely blind.. so he brought himself up in a lot of ways.. but of course, he never knew any different, so to him , thats just 'normal' ... perhaps thats why he's s stubborn ol' mule !
8) 8) 8) 8)

He wont see it as stubborn just independent . I bet he'd climb a mountain for others and be annoyed if someone says thanks. Good Stock.
Any chance of him carving on your turnings or is that possible?? would keep YOUR dependability on him alive so to speak. Just a thought ?.
REgards Boysie.
