I meant this to be a WIP but I only just got the camera sorted out
Tasked by my darling wife for a 'special' present for the MIL....
We decided on a sewing box for her with some compartments and some fancy inlays
So, here it is, walnut (from the tree which my father-in-law and I cut down and planked about 4 years ago) with ebony around the lid and inlays made from holly, yew, mahogany and rose wood. The lid has a foam insert under the baize so that she can stick pins/needles in it

- a mistake on the 'B' I know - but it is quite difficult to spot unless this close up. I find the lettering very difficult to do and need to practise a lot more. Steve Latta has a good video showing him inlaying a 'P' on the FWW website but unfortunately her name does not start with a P!
and the inlays on the top...

The finish is shellac sanding sealer plus 3 very thin coats of Fiddes hardwax oil - now definitely my current favourite finish as you can polish it when it is not quite set after a few hours
I wish I had dnone this as a WIP as I find the comments very helpful in deciding 'which way to go' when faced with a conundrum during construction or planning
Thanks for looking

I like that! Cracking good work. Also good to see that you are pushing your boundaries and learning a different aspect to our craft, I'm thinking of the inlay work here. That walnut looks very nice, from cutting down to finished item eh! A nice circle there.

Thanks for your kind comments
The walnut is beautiful - it was a large tree with a trunk well over 3 feet in diameter. He had the bottom of the trunk carved by someone into a table which I think was a bit disappointing actually. The rest is planked and I have been making boxes and cutting boards for the last couple of years. The problem is getting wide enough sections of the heart wood to make larger pieces - all the wider stuff has gone now
