OK, I know its not even October yet, but bear with me - these things take time.

I am a casual reader of the mainly American Woodnet forum, as I'm sure many UKW members are and indeed I know some on here are members of both. Last year I watched the Hand Tool Secret Santa they organised with great interest and I'm thinking it might be good to try it here this year.

Basically anyone who wants to, enters their name and then gets assigned the name of another entrant to send a gift to, generally in 'secret'. In the Woodnet one a lot of the gifts exchanged were shop-made items, which I quite liked the idea of. This also helps get around the cost of the exercise as you could be giving something that cost you time to make rather than money, if that suited you. Other gifts were purchased items where that suited the individual. On Woodnet it was hand tool based, which personally I think is the right way to do it.

I'd be happy to coordinate the allocation of names if enough people want to do it. So what do you say - anyone up for a handtool secret santa? Please vote in the poll, and/or post a comment and we'll see what the concensus is.

Cheers, Ed. :ho2

Well I like the idea, but I would need some ideas as what to make as a gift and quite soon as Christmas is not far away and time just seem to zip by. That is supposed to be an indication of enjoying oneself but I am not so sure any more. :?

Well I think its looking promising so far, at least the 12 of us who like the idea can do it, if nothing else. I think the poll should run for a while longer to be a bit more representative.

Keep on voting please and if there are any comments on how it should all work then please post in this thread.

Cheers, Ed

I'll give it a go, gawd knows what i'd make tho. Feel sorry for whoever I get :D

If there was one place where you would think you might be safe from talk of christmas until about the 24th of December, you would hope that it might be on a site for woodworkers!!! :D

I supoose, though, if you are going to get Philly to make you a new plane as a secret santa present, you have to give him a bit of notice!

Mike

Welcome to the forum swagman.

Hmm, postage to Australia is something I hadn't really thought about. Not entirely sure how that would work, but I daresay theres a way :-k

Cheers for now, Ed.

Well we're now up to 20 people who are interested, which I think is a good response and more than enough to make it worthwhile, so Project Secret Santa is go.

I'll post a new thread in the next day or so with some basic guidelines/rules and a closing date for entries. If anyone has any comments on santa protocol or how they would like to see this work then please post in this thread and I'll try to join the thoughts together. Alternatively you can wait for my unilaterally declared guidelines which I'll post shortly.

Hopefully this should provide a little handtool related fun for us during the festive season - thanks for supporting it.

Cheers, Ed.

Who wants a didgeridoo and boomerang.
I thought boomerangs went back to were they came from, does this mean if knocked of the end of the bench it would disappear from my shop and reappear in yours?
