I've had this idea rattling about in my head for a while and finally made it. A bit different to my usual posted fayre but there you go.
The idea came about whilst knocking nails into stuff, it being ,where do the ends of the nails go? into the wood or into another dimension? The two rings represent the dimensions, the burned centres being the portal/doorway between, the nails enter on the top dimension and their points emerge from the bottom one.

the rings are Elm,the nails 3"(painted shiny silver), the base is an unknown timber (thats been turned flat, burned, wire brushed and ebonised) and the 3 white pebbles were collected from the beach.

Hi Johnny

Must say I like it. Its got a Goth / Punk thing going for it, as I was looking at it I was also thinking that a bit of barbed wire wou;dn't look out of place, but that could be my own Goth/Punk side comming out.

Anyway here is a link to a wiki page of the first thing that poped into my head when I saw it.

Yup! I think you're staying in too much!

definitely , you need to get out more!

PS. I don't think I would buy it [-( [-(

I saw this on WOW yesterday Johnny,

Interesting wormhole idea

Maybe if you had one of the nails on the inbound journey futher in ( less showing ) and on its outbound journey more out ( more showing )

If you know what i mean, that would indicate more the relationship between the two dimentions.

Not sure the pebbles are needed.

I like the concept of this very much. You are thinking about ideas and building a thought process to express ideas.

This idea I could also see adapted to a mobile hanging from the ceiling. This would add to the space feel as it could move around etc.

Keep the thoughts coming.

Do you keep a note book on the side. I find it helps to be abler to sketch quickly ideas that come into my head or I forget them.

Quite often people think that I am mad  .

But as I heard recently " We can not rely on our eyes when our imagination is out of focus"

I was always more interested in how I could use the tools than how to be creative. I realise now that while how to use the tools is important that learning to be creative has to be developed in proportion to this if not more so.

NY way I have waffled on. Well done on the thought process and I look forward to seeing more ideas.

Though the overall sculpture doesn't appeal to me personally I like the way you have thought it through and created it. Puts me in mind of the nail bowls that Nick Agar (I think it was him) did....didn't like them either so you're in good company. Keep experimenting and showing...between your sculpture and Marks chocolate we are definitely going into new realms.

Pete

You wacky arty types. It'll be unkempt beds next and half sheep next.

JT, I liked it, til I read the description

Johnny - I suppose it depends on whether you're giving vent to artistic pressure, or trying to make a sale. You don't need to explain the former to anyone, but I'm not sure about the latter :? Good luck to you.

Hi Johnny,
I have viewed your latest piece with interest and note a definite tangent. I see no one has remembered your coming together with a certain piece of rotating timber. Could this be a form of delayed concussion?????
Interesting concept,
Regards,
Ian

Thanks for all the replies(well most of them  )

Gitface, glad you like it 8) nothing wrong with a bit of goth and punk.

Loz, thats a good idea but the only two nails it would work for are the ones that line up but the joining one prevents it :-k

Mark S, thanks :)

Pete, I thought you would have liked it, its made of holes!!!

Wizer, you could just ignore the description

LW, I'm not fussed about selling it, quite happy for it to be on me mantle piece. For making money turning I currently have on order 3 sets of coasters,a shed load of spinning tops, a load of pens(10) for a local accountancy firms xmas gifts to its staff and a grave marker post, plaque and vase for someones eco friendly grave to make and I've got a fully booked week at real work too!

Ian, no concussion was involved.....

Been looking at this piece for a while JT,and it just keeps coming back to a nautical theme for me.
I get the idea of a shipwreck with two ships wheels sinking slowly to the bottom, port holes, and the dark plinth resembling a coffin,so death of the sailors/passengers,with the pebbles been the sea bed.
Deep or what
Good piece JT.It got me thinking

I like the general concept (tho not the explanation ;) ) but i'm not that keen on the nails - if these were replaced with turned cones or carved bits, or summat you might have something special imo

i'm not sure i agree with the others on the lack of saleability tho - when you look at the stuff thats sold as "conceptual" sculpture this is considerably better than 90% of the stuff out there

Cheers chaps :D

Paul, glad you saw something in it and now you've said that I can see it too. The 'dimentions' are mean't to look like they are floating in the either so floating through water is close

BSM, thanks :D I thought about turning the points but as nails were the original thought I went with them, maybe should have sprayed them gold though......

JT - it's good news that you're getting orders. Word of mouth I guess, and it means, in your spare time, you can turn what you like.
