Sorry it's probably been done to death, but what's the best way to measure and scribe shelves for the alcove in the photo? I'm using 9mm MDF to make the "invisible" shelves and as you've probably guessed, the walls are very wonky.

Thanks all

Make a template, but use some 3mm hardboard (at the least) instead of cardboard. It will give more accurate results.

Make the template in 2 pieces - Left and Right, overlapping in the centre by (say) 4". Once you have each piece accurately templated, place them both into position and screw them to each other to give you a single template.

HTH.

Wot he said.

He must have been watching me!

Thanks all - I knew cardboard/hardboard was mentioned somewhere in the mists of time.

Cardboard, or preferably hardboard, or better still thin plywood, in two or more pieces as suggested earlier. You only need thin strips to run round the edges.

But don't screw the pieces together; use a hot melt glue gun (joining the pieces with small offcuts, rather than overlapping the pieces themselves), an indispensable tool for jobs like this.

cheers

I'd use thin strips of ply/hardboard (about 1 to 2 inch wide) and make up a "frame" with the corners overlapped and glued together to make a template. Then just lay it on top of your wood to be cut and continue the lines to meet up in the corners.
