I've just read Alf's review of the Veritas Scraper Plane (thanks Alf). Has anyone tried the Veritas Scraper Insert for Nos.4 to 7 Stanley and Record planes? Seems a reasonable alternative to paying £120 for the real thing.

Cheers,

Very disappointing - I gave mine away :( Never could get it to work well. Get the Veritas scraper plane or their #80 style scraper - they are superb.

Cheers

Paul

PS The person I gave the scraper insert to couldn't get it to work well either and he's an experienced scraper user.

Had one fitted in a Stanley #4 and sold it. Did not work that well. Currently doing up a Stanley 112 Scraper plane which is nice. Cost was not much more than the scraper inserts.

Thanks Hatherton, I already use a Veritas scraper card holder which is ok for smaller jobs but I have a couple of old table tops to resurface and find that scrapers are best for removing years/centuries varnish, wax and dirt (following advise given by forum members) and I hope the Scraper Plane will make the job easier!

A cheap old #80 will do the paint removing. I've two, one for coarse paint removing, one for refinishing. You never know where the nails are under the paint.

You might find the Veritas scraper plane initially a little more fiddly to set up because you can angle the blade and bow it. But, if you do, persevere because it's quite straight forward once you get the hang of it and it works really well.

Cheers

After using Paul's No80 I'd agree (I've got one now as well)...really excellent scraper, much better in my view than the oriiginal Stanley offering, - Rob
