I've just received this and noticed that the suction when using the 100mm outlet on it's own is very weak. Basically I was just attaching the 100mm hose to the base, and then trying to suck up some dust off my bench with the 100mm end of the hose directly. Unless you hold the end vertically, a few cm's above the pile of dust, it doesn't suck it up at all.

Is this normal?

I was hoping to use this with my lathe to catch the dust when sanding, but if I have to get this close, it's got no chance :(

I should note that if I attach the reducer to bring it down to a normal shop vac size head, it performs the same as my shop vac.

It's normal to a certain extent. It's not a very powerful extractor (1hp I believe?), but even so, HVLP extractors work by getting large volumes of air moving (or better yet already moving air moving faster and in the right direction). Don't expect them to suck static things off the floor from a hundred paces!

The best test is to see how it performs with the lathe
