Having watched the videos and read up lots of articles, I finally got round to a bit of saw sharpening (for the first time) on a couple of old dovetail saws for practice purposes. Both filed as Rips as being easiest shape to control.
First one was 12TPI which went reasonably OK - not perfect - but cuts reasonably well.
The second one was a 20 odd TPI which I tried to re cut at 14 but gave up on that and cut it at the original spacing. The problem was I was using the smallest file I could find (from Classic Hand Tools) and it was too big!
Anybody know of any source of very small saw files?

I ordered some direct from Lie-Nielsen in the States. But I believe Mike Hancock at Classic Hand Tools has some too.
Hope this helps

Having spent countless hours as an apprentice sharpening saws, (good for you training boy!) my advise is don't bother. I now use various of the 'Japanese' type saws with disposable blades and IMO they are the best thing since sliced bread.
