Has anyone heard of the Somax saw set? I'm searching for a saw tooth setting device for very fine blades. The Eclipse model only goes to 12tpi I think.

Cheers

Yes - it's commonly discussed, since it's probably the best new one available.

The older types of the Eclipse 77 handle slightly finer teeth than the more recent types. Further, they are quite easy to modify, by narrowing the plunger and grinding the anvil to a shallower angle (anvil angle = depth of set).

I've never gone below 16 TPI though.

Alternatively the anvil can be shimmed by an offset cam washer made from a solder tag. I've done this to reduce the set but it's a bit 'hit and miss' and these sorts of mods often are, the plunger will still need to be ground narrower though for finer blades - Rob

Hi,

I have several Eclipse 77s and one has a noticably thinner plunger it looks like its the oldest one, but like BB I haven't gone below 12 tpi, and not likley to with these eyes

Could you explain that? Since the amount of set is determined (I thought) by the angle of the anvil face edge bevel, I thought grinding the edge bevel at a new angle was the only way.

If you have an easier way, I'm all ears!

BB - you're probably familiar with a 'solder tag' (if not, a washer like disc with a projection on one side so that a lead can be soldered to it) If the projection is cut short a little and then bent back onto the washer a 'bump' is formed on one face, at one point, thus forming a sort of 'cam' arrangement. The tag can then be positioned underneath the anvil such that the 'bump' throws the anvil forward, so that the set is reduced by the thickness of the bump...maybe .25mm. It's a bit rudimentary but does seem to work (or it did the last time I tried it) - Rob

Ah - you're tilting the anvil, thus reducing the bevel angle (or at least the EFFECTIVE bevel angle).

I vaguely remember that a while back, one of the Pros. (Mike Wenzloff?) did a piece on modifying the Somak for very fine teeth?

I also think that when you are getting down the these TPI's the fleam resulting from the filing is probably providing enough set?

When I bought the blue (fine) Somax saw-set from Tools for Working Wood I was told that the anvil is the same as the one on the gold (regular) set, and that only the plunger was different.

You're thinking of the "burr" or "feather", not the fleam.

Although I've never tried to use them (because I have several "nice" eclipses) I have a saw set that ressembles a pair of pliers, no idea who makes them but I assume they could adjust to pretty much any TPI. Always assuming you knew how much to off set.
