I have just bought a Disston Rip saw off E-bay it has 3 teeth per inch where can I get a file for sharpening.

Thanks guys but they don't seem to have anything big enough for this saw.

Hmm. I don't have a saw that coarse. It looks like a 7" slim is too small. You might try an 8" cant saw file.

The right file might be hard to find, but you want a regular taper 10" (10" is about right, I found a 7" regular file too small for 3 1/2ppi) for a 3ppi saw; you could also try an 8" slim taper. You might find it easier to buy a 8"-12" 3-Square file from a machinist supply outlet. The difference is the 3-Sq is double cut (and a bit rougher), and also a bit sharper on the corners. they used to come in turnip, 2nd cut, smooth - up to 20" long. Taper and slim taper files used to come in lengths up to a mere 14".

2nd hand taper files are usually no good from flea markets; the corners cannot be sharpened, the teeth are usually too worn down. The face of the 3 sides is usually ok for other filing purposes.

Hei Nellist!

What would be big enough?

At 3TPI the gullet is 8,47mm wide, correct?
To keep costs low, your looking for a saw file
with doubble gullets wide.
IE Dieter Schmid sells them here:

Farmer's saws 200 mm 16 mm 2 302526 € 7.10

Don't worry about the misssing 0,94mm, they don't matter at all.

Rummaging amongst my files I found some Austrian (Bludan) 8" 3-Square files that are a perfect fit for the 3 1/2ppi rip saw. I had completely forgotten they were there.

As I came across a nail whilst ripping today, tomorrow might be the time for a touch-up. I was doing around 6" per minute in 2" old dry Douglas Fir, and working up a bit of a sweet (it is winter here, around 18 degrees at the time of ripping), but good exercise for an old fart.

Hi Nellist,

your saw is matter of discussion at
traditionaltools

Wich leads me to the question:
3 ppi (the length between the pins is 12,7mm (1/2")) or
3 tpi (the length between the pins is 8,47mm (1/3"))?

length between saw teeth tips is 10.4 cm.

Hi Nellist,

10,4 mm ?!

so it's 3 1/2 ppi or 2 1/2 tpi.

At 90° rake the backs of the teeth are 12mm long (about 1/2").

The saw file from above would work, but not at 3 sides.

You better buy a square file :D

Another idea: Make two teeth out of one and get a 5ppi saw wich should be a good riper.

Cheers
Pedder

Pedder, I think you mean 3 1/2 ppi or 2 1/2 tpi. This is the same as the saw I have. I don't think rip saws went lower than 3 1/2ppi from the fatory.

I would not get this saw recut, for 2 reasons:

(1) the cost is going to be more than the saw is worth

(2) a saw like this works well for rough ripping, my recent experience.

You will also be able to sharpen with an 8" or larger taper file, and you will get the use of all three sides.
