Hi,

After loads of nagging, sorry prompting I made my better half some salad servers in ash finished with Danish oil.

They where band sawn from some 25mm ash which was then split down the middle, shaped with spoke shaves, rasps, files, scrapers and sandpaper. They are slightly curved which was done on the band saw.

Now I am just waiting to pull them out of the dishwasher completely knackered

Nice pieces,Pete, and a useful project to make - would almost be tempted to make some myself,if I ate salads..

very nice :)

although I am curious to see what people think about the danish oil finish ... is it food safe ?

Hi, Tusses

Once it has gone off I can't see it transfering to the food so I think it will be safe, i'll get the wife to try them out first

Very Nice Pete, and I'dve thought that Danish Oil will be fine, it's just linseed oil isn't it?

Wiki Says.

not sure about dishwasher proof though  :D :D

I once made SWMBO a bracelet - which she promptly left on when she got in the bath, she now knows what happens when you get wood wet!

That being said, I've rescued the butchers block from the Dishwasher a couple of times!

Danish Oil just never comes up when the question is asked about food safe finishes , thats all.

I wondered what other members might think.

Hi,

I made a kitchen knife form O1 steel and Rosewood that has been in the dish washer a couple of times (you tell them but they don't seem to hear) but after drying out and lots of regrinding it is nearley as good as new.

I've never heard of danish oil being used as a food safe finish, and wouldn't have considered it myself.
Would like to be educated on this one!

Nice salad servers :) .

I would shy away from Danish oil for a project like this. The wood will move quite a bit over time because of the irregular end grain exposure and the different tensions along the grain. I can imagine flakes of dried finish joining the salad and moisture from the food getting trapped beneath remaining layers of finish.

I use wooden spoons and spatulas a lot in my kitchen and none of them are finished. They just get dropped into the washing up (hand washed) after the meal and none appear any the worse for it. Over the years there has been some discolouration from contact with hands and foodstuffs such as tomatoes and beetroot; but that isn't staining - it's patina ;) !

Hi,

I rubbed on two coats of danish oil which has soaked in to the wood the thickness of the finish is microscopic so I won't have a problem with it flaking off. If they get battered I will make some more.

I just use vegetable oil, works fine on chopping boards. Wooden implements are disposable really, wooden spoons get dirty and should be chucked out ever year or so

I just lob mine in the dishwasher and set to a hot wash. They come out a bit bendy  but are definitely clean  - Rob
