It's very sad to have to report that John Brown, the chairmaking columnist, died this morning in his sleep. He'd been gravely ill for a few weeks. Anyone who read his columns in Good Woodworking 15 years ago will remember his passion, his opinions, his handtools, his chairs, and his cat, Gallipoli. He was always generous with his time and advice. He slipped into unconsciousness yesterday afternoon, just as his daughter Molly was reading him some of the many emails from readers we'd passed on last week. So thanks to everyone who sent John messages of support and thanks: they were greatly appreciated during his last few days.

.

John Brown wrote one of the shortest and best books on chair-making there is, in my opinion.

I expect that you could say he was a one-off with an unique approach to his craft .

Very sad news. I remember reading some of his articles but his skill level was way ahead of mine so I've nevr attempted a chair :(
