Rutlands are discounting their Quangsheng range of planes.

Is this good or bad, could it be end of line new stock etc ?

John

You mean the Planes - quite good I hear.

Rutlands on the other hand - we almost have a sub-forum for them!

You can knock another tenner off those planes now with the 15% off offer.

Really good deal I think

D'oh! Just placed an order for one of the block planes! Actually, it's fortunate they don't stock the rebating block planes - otherwise, at these prices, I'd have ordered one of those as well! :D

If not for the discount, I'd have ordered them from Matthew at Workshop Heaven instead. He seems to take the time and care to check the contents of the wooden box before dispatching it.

Let's see how this one arrives from Rutlands... :)

I borrowed one of the rebating planes off Matthew a few months ago (forum passaround) and I was very impressed. I couldn't myself see how the Lie-Nielsen model could perform any better, without having one to compare beside it.

As these planes are produced to a budget, there is a concern that the steel/iron used for the bodies may not be as well seasoned of stable as what Lie-Nielsen, Veritas and Clifton will use... Time will tell whether that's true or not. Though, if it is true, it shouldn't give you much trouble with a block plane; more so with a longer jointer plane, which relies on having an accurate sole.

I am trying to get more into hand tool work, and do less with machinery. At the moment I have an old stanley 41/2 that was given to me by father in law and last year I bought myself a LN block. I was intending to add a Veritas LAJ as my next plane, but for the price of that I could get a QS 4,5 and 6! Am I better off sticking with the quality and good reputation that the veritas LAJ has, or would I be better off with the added versatility that the 3 seperate planes would offer?
(sorry if I am kinda side tracking the thread!)
Thanks for any advice!

To be honest just stick with one plane.

A quangshang 5 looks quite versatile or maybe a LN five and half if you can afford - that'll do most things.

My block plane arrived this morning and, from my initial impressions at least, it seems as good as the rebating block plane Matthew let us passaround a few months ago. The lever cap has a different colour/finish but it feels solid, the blade takes a good edge and it was well packed with grease to prevent corrosion.

Just a shame they planted a "Dakota" sticker on the box... :p

 :D
