My shed/workshop gets a bit damp in the winter and the bed of the lathe gets a film of rust from time to time.
To help stop this I have been spraying the exposed bed with WD40, is there anything better to use.

Hi Reg, a regular wipe over with polish (Chestnut's woodwax 22 works for me) keeps the rust at bay and helps the banjo/tailstock slide

Yes Reg,same as Graham.Just regular wipes with a wax.
I try and do it once a week, when i try and have a tidy up on all cast and metal tops.

Hello again Reg,

in addition to the good tips above, I also use a sun tube.....a what I haer you say.....it is a metre long metal tube containing a filament, it uses 100watts same as light bulb, and I have it on timer to come on at night time and have it fitted on a board under the front of the lathe. It does stop rust and keeps some heat in the workshop during the cold weather.

I know I go on a bit but I mean well

Hi GT,

Is this similar to a greenhouse heater to keep frost at bay?

I also use gun oil which I find superior to wd40 etc which tend to evaporate too easily

Hey up YorkieT,

I suppose you could use it in a greenhouse,,,but I have a paraffin heater in my greenhouse. The sun tube keeps the temp in the workshop?garage above freezing anyway :)

I am going to switch to chestnut wax.
I have an oil filled electric radiator in the workshop and a timer switch, if it helps I may start it running for some off the night as we are having this cold and damp weather.
The bench sander is working fine but found the stop plait on the belt sander is not to clever and may make up my own one, I over tightened the bolt (oops).
Thanks all for all suggestions, now back to the ice skating.

Helloo Bob,

I bought it at an electrical wholesalers in Huddersfield, but many places sell them. It was about 14 pounds and works a treat, and costs the same as leaving a 100 watt bulb on all night.

See you Tuesday if you want to discuss it

Hey up YorkieT,

that's like the one I have, plus I have a smaller one attached to the bottom of my workbench, although the smaller one did come prewired.
