Has anyone bought one of the cheaper clarke models from machine-mart? I was thinking of buying one of their 7 drawer mechanics tool-chests for the workshop. There quite reasonable price compared to snap-on or teng, but I wondered just how cheap and nasty they are and whether they are worth it?

Byron I have one which I use for my car tools etc and they are not too bad for the money.

One or two things I would recommemd is to get the optional rubber mats, especialy if you are going to store metal tools, and also if you chip the metal they rust real easily (and I mean real easily) so I would keep some touch up paint handy. Finally keep the runners oiled because they can stick without it.

Except for these few things, as I have said they are not too bad for the money.

Cheers

Mike

Byron, I just bought one of these from Makro.

Although not the quality of more expensive brands, I have found it ideal so far. The lower cupboard is great for keeping my routers.

Hi Simon

Except for the colour (mines red) that looks exactly the same as the one I got from machine mart.
The only difference being I only got one bar to lock the top draws, but I did get another longer one to lock the bottom draws and fold down door.

Good price

Cheers

Thanks for the feedback chaps! I think i'll go ahead and order one, I will be getting the rubber matting as well as I'll be storing my chisels/planes etc. in the unit and want to avoid them getting scratched.

This should signal the beginning of phase 2 of my workshop - the completion and re-jigging of the interior.

I got one about 8 years back from MM (about 150 quid) it was dreadful, runners supported inside by tiny lugs in the sheet steel about 3 x20 mm. Load with tools and they bend so the drawer drops off.

You have to remove one drawer to see this, so don't buy without a good look. The more expensive ball bearing jobs may be better, but best check first!
