hello folks- this may sound daft but.....on the robert sorby fingernail profiler can you also produce normal bowl gouge shapes? or does it have to have a swept back grind?

asking on behalf of a freind with no internet access- who i'm trying to help get started

George

I think it comes with a flat platform on which you can grind your spindle roughing gouge etc. But not sure if it's an add on or comes with it.

Evenin' George.

Don't know about the Sorby. But you can with others profile jigs. Move the leg back until it is parallel with the gouge then you should be able to rotate the tool and get a square across bevel. The only thing I think may stop you is the cross bar the jig slides on, but it is worth a try.

Or use a flat platform.

Mine came with a flat platform that I use for that sort of grind. Also for skews, roughing gouge etc. It should be a part of the package.

thanks chaps- all i need is a jig which will definatley do normal bowl gouge shapes- in a fool proof way- i'm so use to the tormek i'm not sure what will be best for him

George, (check your PM's) as the Sorby gouge jig is a licenced version of the Tormek it obviously can do all the profiles shown on Page 20 of the Tormek booklet.

My fingernail profiler came this morning. Not set it up yet. I was planing on making a pull out arm for normal gouge sharpening. You only get the platform if you buy the deluxe version of the RS Jig.

Would be interested to know how you get on with it.
