By sheer luck ive got my hands on a Rbert sorby jig for sharpening.

ive pretty much got it set up, had to get instructions from tinternet.

The platform for sharpening the bigger tools, Roughing gouge etc how do i set that to the right angle as it has no marks or anything to tell you what angle your at, is it just a case of trying to get it lined up with whats on the tool or do i have apiece missing?

if its just by judgement isnt there a chance that the cutting angle will be changed after each successive sharpening?

cheers for help

Set the rest to match your tool angle.

For more consistent setting make yourself some setting guides out of scrap MDF or similar like this:

Make several with angles to suit those you wish to use.

Place the bottom edge on the flat rest and adjust the rest until the sloping angle forms best approximation on the stones periphery.

Mornin' Alie.

 (Not my idea) A tip when sharpening on a jig. If you are happy with the angle your bevel is already at, then when you want to sharpen coat the bevel with a felt marker. Angle the table to the best you can by eye with the bevel on the wheel and lock up slightly.

Turn the wheel by hand and look at the mark made on the bevel, and adjust the table until you are rubbing the marker colour from the whole bevel, lock up the table and sharpen away.

It sound long and drawn out, but doesn't take long with practice.

Alie.
I had a small steel gauge with mine with the varying angles on,but has as been said it is better to find your own angles that you are comfy with.
Have you also looked on the Sorby website at the movie clips. It shows you on their how to set it up.Sort of.
