I have just been given a Robert Sorby ProEdge sharpening machine for my birthday, and wanted to rave about it.

I already have a Tormek, and I thought at first that the Sorby was duplication - in fact I even thought of swapping it for something else.

I'm glad I didn't, as I have never come across a sharpening machine this good.

It comes with three different grit belt, which are absolutely fine for coarse medium and fine sharpening. And other grits are available.

The machine is superbly made, solid chunky well-machined parts, nothing flimsy to be found, and mounted on a very solid steel plate that should be bolted or screwed onto a surface. The motor is quiet and powerful. Changing belts is super easy, and the angle setting jig has accurate preset angles for just about anything you could think of, so resharpening at the same angle is also easy and accurate. The whole sharpening belt can be angled backwards, which makes sharpening long tools easier.

The thing that has really impressed me is the speed at which I can sharpen tools. This machine is so fast. And despite its speed it doesn't heat the edge of the tool up too much. I have been able to regrind angles on tools very quickly and easily.

At the belt is completely flat where the sharpening takes place, the resulting face on the tool is also completely flat.

I have a cloth buffing wheel on my grinder already, and I have found that after sharpening with the finest grit, a light buffing on my wheel knocks of the wire edge and leaves pretty much a mirror finish on the tool.

Apparently you can buy honing wheels to attach to the Sorby machine, but I haven't got one. I think with my buffing wheel it's probably unnecessary. There is a also a jig for fingernail profiles on gouges.

Altogether an excellent piece of kit. Thank you Robert Sorby's
