Hello Strongbow57,

How much do you have to spend and do you like putting some work into an old tool or do you like them good to go?

Ok Ed,

If vintage is your thing brands like Spear & Jackson or Disston are safe bets. If you contact these guys http://www.oldtools.co.uk/tools/Drabble ... p_Saw.html you will most likely avoid the roulette wheel of e-bay. I would assume they could arrange for the saw to be sharpened.

As far as new stuff goes http://www.flinn-garlick-saws.co.uk/aca ... Range.html have a comprehensive range and my dovetail saw I bought arrived sharp. The only thing against them is some find the handle uncomfortable.

Birthday coming up for me and I've requested either one of these - http://www.workshopheaven.com/tools/Gyo ... _Grip.html or http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ice-Bear-Japa ... 2a1416872e

Don't know if you're looking for a traditional English saw but I fancy these Japanese jobbies

That's not a ripsaw... this is a ripsaw.

I firmly believe that the most efficient way to rip material by hand is with a 28-36" blade and with as low a TPI/PPI as you can push... my 30" 1.5tpi Disston will cut a very long way on a single stroke and will make a 3m long rip cut in 2½" thick Douglas Fir in under two minutes.

Ok, size wins in this case, but can you use that behemoth to resaw by hand as well ?

Yeah! but you have to use another saw to establish a straight kerf for it to start in though... I have a 26" Tyzack with less aggressive teeth, which is better suited for re-sawing thin things.

That would make a good utube video, you've got to show us now :)

I intend use a vertical piece, clamp to the face with a suitable spacer to start mine off - to be removed once the saw cuts full depth into the timber
