Following on from Wizer's TickTock Bowl thread ...

Managed to finish the 'Retirement Gift Clock'.
She's a 'big 'un' at almost 18" High. :D

I'm S**t-Scared that the people that asked for it won't like it... I've absolutely no confidence in something I made being acceptable to someone else, other than to the wife & kids :D ( and they have an obligation to say 'yes, Dad its OK ! ' )

So I thought I'd show you all first... if its horrendous, please say so.. cause I have 3 days spare to try something different.

Retirement Clock :

The sparkly ring in the middle is 'Inlace', with some gold metal-flake added to the mix.

Head & base are Cherry,
Pedestal is a piece of Ash.

Motor & Ring, from Clockparts as usual ...
& Battery, courtesy of Asda & Duracell

I quite like it Alun. I'm sure who ever gets their sticky little paws on it will be very happy. Though why people always give a clock to those who retire beats me, I'm sure I wouldn't want to be reminded of how little time I had to go all the time.

I would have made the foot a little wider, for stability, and the visual effect, but it's fine. Also I would prefer to see all the wood the same, or if a combination something a bit more striking in colour than Ash. This is only my personal tastes, so don't go and change it now.

I think your confidence will get a little boost from this, not bad at all.

Use the 3 days off to do something else now.

Looks fine. The problem is that all of us would do it differently and at the end of the day it only matters what the recipient thinks so no mater what we say, it could still be no good, or excellent. Personally I would make the pedestal slimmer. Lovwe the actual clock. Like Tam I would either use the same wood or a contrast, ebonized or darker wood. All this is personal. Afraid you will have to wait until the recipient sees and comments. Any chance of getting the people who asked for it to comment first?

hi allun
stunning clock mate, the recipient should be proud of it, but i also would like to see all the same wood if possible.

Those dials look familiar ;)

Very nice work Jenx. I'm sure they'll be over the moon

Looks great Alun.

I'm sure the recipient will be delighted. Any likes/dislikes are down to personal taste, the craftmanship can't be faulted.

I would relax and get on with something else, the jobs a good'un :D :D :D

Not to sure about these two woods Alun :?
The Ash doesn't seem to go with the Very nice Cherry.
If it was all in the Cherry it would look a lot better,i think,as the overall design does look good, though i would make the foot just a little wider.
Have you glued it all together. If not just try the two Cherry pieces and see how that would look. This is of course just my opinion

Alun, If whomever it's for does not like it I would be very pleased to have it
It looks stunning and I'm sure in reality even better. Lovely bit of turning and design, congrats. REgards Boysie

Thanks Everyone ....

I agree about the 'suspect' contrast between the cherry & ash --
Couldn't get a hold of a cherry 'stick' anywhere unfortunately

Perhaps should have gone the 'ebonising' route for the pedestal part - never thought of that ! that could have perhaps worked well.
( Especially as I have GOT ebonising laquer here  )

However - as always, had a lot of fun making the clock,
and we'll see what the people that asked for it think, later this week.

A 'plus' for me with this, was the inlace.
Having never used it before, I was a bit twitchy about trying it... especially when it come out the (premixed) can , like gloopy porridge, and would look like it's ruined your work, when you apply it initially.
Once its hardened - and you turn it down, its actually quite effective, and I will definately look for an application where I can use it again.
When I was 'working' it.. I recognised the smell it generates, but couldn't place it in the mind ....I can now though, it smells exactly like Isopon Cataloy body-filler for cars. !

Again, thanks to everyone for your input. - Its most helpful 8) 8) 8)
Will let you know how its 'received', once the people come to collect it later. :D :D :D

Hi Alun,
Thats a very fine clock for a retirement gift, it certainly beats an imitation brass plastic job that glitters is is far away as possible from Gold!
Thats quite unique and something for you to be proud of and for the recipient to have on their mantlepiece.
Well done,
Regards,
Ian

I think it would have been better all in the same wood but there is absolutely nothing wrong with it as is. It will make the lucky recipient a fine retirement present good job Jenx 8)

Just to finish this one off ...
The clock was apparently presented today, and the person that got it seems to be very happy with it.

That'll do. 8)

I still think ebonising the 'ped' would have been a good idea...
thanks for that :D

Appreciate all the input, and ideas / comments & criticisms...
All part of the learning .. thank you !
:D :D :D :D :D
