After my colouring failure and the colours not being able to be rescued I thought that I would complete the hollow form cut some dimples and stain it black with gold to highlight the dimples.

Here is the failed colour attempt.

Anyway C & C welcome on the hopefully successful rescue

Ooooooo I like that, thank goodness for the colouring problem I say.

As much as I admire the best of the multi coloured blends and the effort put into learning their skill and production, that piece goes in an alternate direction with hard colour contrasts looking to me to be more sophisticated in appearance and hits me hard in the 'desirable' category.

Did I say "I Like".

Thank you all.

The dimples are done with a diamond ball shaped burr in a multi tool took ages to do as I kept taking breaks it is hard on my hands, that is where the wife comes in by making the tea

I think it look very nice indeed, as good as any coloured item.

Hi Dalboy,

Well saved,I would not know where to start, black first then cut the dimples and colour them???? I think that I will have to come to you for lessons.

Peter

Thank you everyone I am always nervous of putting colour or texture to a piece that I have spent time turning, but I have learnt that there is always a way to clean up if it fails and if by chance it is a total failure it is only a piece of wood.

Try your local turning club may be a good place to start. not knowing what stage you are at turning all I can say is start by getting tool control and making bowls and hollow forms along with getting a good finish then move on to this type of work.

What you see here is just a basic hollow form which I have used a multi tool and a ball shaped diamond burr on to form the dimples, I then applied the black stain once dry applied some gold gilt on small areas at a time so it filled the dimples wiping off any excess so the black can be seen. Do this until all the form is done.
I had to touch up with black around the rim. Finish with a spray finish as if you try and wipe it off some of the gold and stain will also come off with it

Nice re-work - what were you trying to achieve with the colour that did not give the result you were after?

I do like the texturing you've achieved on the final item, it is a nice balance of random but even if that makes sense that is therefore pleasing on the eye.

One thing to think about that may make it even better next time, perhaps leave some more meat in the base of the form so you can bring the foot in to a smaller diameter when you reverse turn the foot, as it does look a little heavy to me for what will be a decrotive rather than functional item. (I attach a piccy of a coloured piece I have done to illustrate what I mean).

However, that aside, nice job!

Simon

I was trying to get an even blend between the colours. Which I have now think that I have solved but will have to try in practice

I understand completely

I have been looking at it this morning and agree the base looks to large/heavy sometimes it is not until it comes off the lathe that you see it
