Morning DW

Adobe Acrobat reader ...

Zip software ...

Google 'free zip software' and take your pick.

If you've got Adobe Flash and/or Java installed, update them to the latest issue.

Don't forget the Windows updates from Microsoft.

If you install Avast, (free version) it will check for oudated software on a 'quick scan' . You can update from within Avast, but watch out for the option to change your browser, if it appears.

Cheers

Dave

Save yourself a load of time and head over to www.ninite.com

All you need to do is choose all the free software and plugins you want then download the installer. Run it and sit back whilst it installs everything in one hit, it's scripted so it doesn't install any of the freeware\crapware the installers usually want to :)

I have used the free version and the Professional version to update 5000 PC's with the latest updates in one hit.

Cheers,

Jon.

Don't bother with Java or Flash which are gradually being withdrawn because of their insecurities. If a programme needs either, it will ask for it & you can decide then.

Nothing wrong with the suggestions made so far - if you know the differences between the programmes you want.

There are a lot of free PDF creators, confusingly called PDF printers, which will open a PDF file for you to view & will also allow you to save the source (any source that is printable eg a web page) to your PC/laptop.
Once installed select 'Print' from the file menu, in the window that opens select the PDF Printer, then name the file & where you want to save it & click 'Save'.
• If you dont see the menu at the top of your browser, right click on an empty space on the top border & click on 'Menu Bar'. You will then see 'File, Edit, View' etc in the top toolbar.

PDF Viewers/Creators (4 of 30+ free programmes).

Foxit Reader - http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/index.php
PDF X-change lite - http://www.tracker-software.com/product ... hange-lite

There are well over 100 free zip programmes, & as mentioned earlier, Windows 7 has archival ability built in.

7 Zip is one of the most popular - http://www.7-zip.org/

As with all free programmes read carefully whilst installing, select 'Custom Install' if offered & remove the ticks from boxes that install unwanted add ons.

LibreOffice Writer will generate a PDF version of your document if that's what you want to do. NB Java isn't being withdrawn, the Java plugin for browsers might be what you are thinking about. If security is your concern you'll be better off not using Windows for accessing the WWW.
