Whats the best way?

will angle grind out very lightly the odd crack but wondering weather to just mix up cement and pva or use a more modern epoxy?

You must chip out all loose material.
If you cut back with an angle grinder, but at an angle (like a dovetail shape) so that he back is wider than the face. This is what pro decorators do and is essential to make the filler stay in well.
What caused the crack? If you don't establish that, and deal with it, the crack will appear again.

I used floor tile adhesive in mine. It sticks well, sponges off and dries quickly.

As above nice and fine tile adhesive troweled into opened up cracks, It has polymers and other additives so resists
faster drying out and cracking.
I tend to prime with an Exterior pva and apply.the tile adhesive.
Painters here use it quite a lot.
When done with some care, it "bluffs" in very well indeedy far superior to any exterior filler as the adhesive is a similar
grit and consistency.

I've had good results from Toupret Fibacryl. Seems to have better flexibility than most exterior fillers so cracks don't reopen. As others say, check first to make sure render is still firmly bonded.

I used cement, white stuff in my case, mixed with SBR into a thick paint and worked it into the cracks. Worked very well and is a good bit better than pva. It does tend to set quickly though so only mix what you will use in around 15mins.
