My first few attempts had all sorts of wonk built in, it's part of the experience!

Your repair looks pretty good, and I'll bet most people won't even notice any asymetry. A small cheap spray gun might well be good enough for this job - my guitars have all been finished with a touchup gun which cost about £15.

I will break out the unused spray gun that came with my small compressor and give it a try on some scrap.

Will let you know how I get on. Thanks for all the help you and Jim have kept me motivated.

I know if I needed to do similar again it would be a whole lot better.

I doubt if the wonkiness will affect the guitar (apart from you knowing it's there)....the nut will align the strings.

For poly finishes that are that mahogany brown I found the best thing to colour it with (surprisingly) was Ronseal woodstain...the 5 year external "does what it says on the tin" stuff! I found this out because I noticed that the guitar in question that I was repairing was a similar colour to my window ledge!

Finish then with gloss spray from a tin. It is difficult to feather match poly gloss because it doesn't "melt" into the finish like nitro does.
