Hi guys, as you can see I'm new to this forum. I've just bought a house and am going to try to repair a lot of the wooden things myself.

How would you go about repairing a door panel like that of the picture?

I quessing thats one panel of a four panel door, made of pine that been smashed through and then repaired to make the house sellable?

all I can think of is to fill and paint the repair as it is to improve whats there, or to cut out the bad bits and splice in a new centre to the panel and then fill and paint it till you are happy with the result.

It looks as if it is a 1920-30's door with beads run off the stiles, etc, so not easy to replace a panel. Panels fiitted at time of asssembly. Solution may be to scrape panel, establish the extent of damage, and then advice may be easier. Alternatively as suggested buy a new door. You should be able to find a door to fit. Probably be imperial sizes and not metric so check carefully, give or take an 1/8 inch or so (a few mm). Plenty of info here on fitting a replacement door. Best wishes.

Thanks for all your advice, I guess repairing it to a good standard is not possible. I will replace the door, but will now have to replace the other 3. I do however prefer the look on these doors than the modern type. If it wasn't damaged all it needs is some new handle, a sand and paint. Shame

Hi novicewoody, I would take out the broken panel by firstly smashing out the already broken section in the middle, then working out the rest of it without damaging the moulding. Chisel out the moulding on one side, the least visible side. you can then pop in another panel and replace the moulding with either an off the shelf one that is as near a match as you can get or take a piece of the original moulding to a cabinet maker and get them to make you up some to match.

If you really want to repair the door you will need a router with a template cutter. The bearing on the cutter will follow the stile on the door and remove the moulding holding the panel in. Then cut and fit a new panel (DO NOT GLUE IN) and replace the moulding with a matching pinned on moulding.

Get some 4mm ply and glue panels over the existing panels? ...make them look like raised panels?
If you replace the door, a near match is usually adequate - it's not often that anyone looks at two doors at the same time, and anyway as a relative of mine used to say - 99% of people won't notice, and 99% of the people who do notice don't matter.

Instead of replacing all the doors, have a look to see if there's a reclamation yard nearby. You might find one that's a good match to your damaged door.
