As an inner city flat dweller, a workshop in a garage/shed is not an option for me and my woodwork is rapidly outgrowing the (now empty) dining room. As such I was considering trying to rent a lock-up or garage to create a workshop in.

Has anyone experience in doing this? Would you trust a rented space to hold all your gear safe? Does anyone know where to start finding such a location?

Had a bit of a trawl on the internet but to no avail...

It might be that a householder (elderly) might take you on, could involve you doing return favours like a spot of gardening.

I used to rent some workspace in battersea, It was in a series of lockups which while I was there was never any thefts, they ranged in size from single garage to four car garage sizes.
lots of security and a big dog helped, they were on sheepcote lane, don't know if that is any help for you though, they did have a website but don't remember the details, was something like workspace london
!

I expect you will have considered the electricity etc, but one thing to watch out for is damp. I suggest avoiding renting a workshoop which is going to be too expensive to damp-proof and heat, due to its size, shape or location.
This is because if you use solid wood you will get movement problems when you bring the produce into a centrally heated house
