Refurbishing lettering on brass sundial

I have a 3mm thick brass sundial plate where I'd like to refurbish the engraved lettering. My current idea is to clean out the lettering as best I can possibly using a brass wire brush and then polish the whole surface. Then paint the lettering black without having to be too careful and then polish the whole thing back again to just leave the paint in the lettering. Unless of course some of you have better ideas.

I was watching this the other day and they did a great job of cleaning up the brass tags on the safe

@Jbonevia interesting video though I'm not sure why a renovation should require quite so much fettling of existing parts.
