Really like it, Steve. I've got a similar kit on order - can't wait to try it out.
Thanks for the picture - it helps spur me on seeing other peoples' work.

Hi Steve,

Nice work!

I also dabble in pens but haven't made any in acrylic yet, and probably won't. It's not a problem with it not being wood, (some people I know turn their nose up at anything 'artificial'), just that I made a Xmas bauble for SWMBO a couple of weeks ago and part of it was a small Xmas made tree from a green acrylic pen blank. The shavings were incredibly long and wrapped themselves around what I was making so I had to stop every few seconds and clear them, I don't have your patience obviously!

Cheers,

Neil.

Very nice work,Steve - never been tempted to try making pens (yet..),but that one is quite beautiful :D

That's a "cracker" of a x-mas pen Steve.
I'm like Neil (not a fan of acrylic), but the colours
in that are great, well done mate and keep it up.
Are you still dabbling with the scroll saw? :)

Wow thanks guys for the remarks, never expected that. Its great fun making the pens, not as challenging as making bowls etc.. but i enjoy it.

BTW george, it was for sale, gone now, but no probs building another
or there's always this one

forgive me if i am wrong and maybe its just the camera angle, but the barrel does not appear to be exactly centric (on the first piece in your montage) - there seems to be a slight lip on one side where it meets the platinum nip end piece. I have had this problem, presumably caused by the mandrel not being properly aligned in the taper. Is that so, or is it an illusion?

Beautiful piece, though. Cant get on with acrylic, myself.

hi kevin
thank you, i haven't had a go with the scrollsaw for ages, but i am going to make some pen stands with it shortly, i recently bought a new chuck for the lathe and i am going to make goblets, bowls and boxes later this year, i am just waiting for a parcel to arrive with some earing templates for me to make , cant wait for it.

I have to agree with you on the 'look' of the pen, i can assure you it was made correctly and sold very quickly too, but after i took the photo into Photoshop it made me go and check it, i think it was probably because i had 3 lights on it, not sure.
You really need to check that the madrel is central and dont apply too much pressure onto it, but if there is a slight kink, you can always straighten it out.

Hi Steve that is a beautiful pen you have made, where do you get your kits from? And can I ask how do you price them, I may wish to sell some of mine in the furture but unsure the right way to go. By the way my Yew pen turned out OK in the end!!!

hi
i get my kits from vince, you can find him @ http://www.theturnersworkshop.co.uk/
good prices and good service, recommended, please tell him steve sent you.

the way i price my stuff is kit+postage+ display case + a little extra for my time, i will never be rich selling them, but as i enjoy it i really dont mind.
Do yourself a favour and buy the good quality platings, you can guarantee them for years as opposed to weeks with the cheaper kits.

Not as challenging? You have to work to a fixed dimension, you're using what is apparently a material that is not easy to use well. I have no interest in making pens but to me it seems that making a bowl would be a lot easier. What you are doing is beautiful work and appreciated enough for people to buy so don't put yourself down. It's every bit as skilful as the things that the rest of us do.

Nice looking pens Steve. Have you had a go at casting your own acrylic blanks. I did some last summer, its great, very adictive. I have a shed full of the blanks cast from a £25.00 container of resin.

Here are two as an example. Green is a Slimline kit & orange is a Sierra kit.

Steve you will need to give me some tips about getting better pictures of my pens. Yours are great.

Stunning pens Steve. Quite fancy having a go at them myself. Where/how did you start learning how to make them?.
Regards
Steve
