Miles away - totally impractical...
I've been offered an RP3000X for a very reasonable price to go with my new lathe...

Anyone any experience of using this chuck?

(For those who've not seen my other thread... In summary, I'm a novice, first lathe, wanting to turn some door knobs for my cabinets...)

Many thanks

First things first Matt, does it match your spindle thread?

I believe mikec has one of those chucks, perhaps a PM might be worth while.

In that case, my opinion would be that the reasonable price would have to be very reasonable to make it worth you're while. It's not your average scroll chuck and uses tommy bars instead of a hex key.

One of these...

...will get you turning knobs and is useful in your armoury, even if you do eventually upgrade to a proper chuck.

Tom, a Jacobs chuck fitted in a headstock morse taper without a tie bar through the lathe spindle is not safe for turning.
It's OK for drilling as the drill feed pressure ensures the taper fit and hold.

Used for turning vibration can cause the taper to let go and move forward into the cutting tool or rest at best, in worst case, sanding say, it can leave the headstock at speed.

I would have thought that a decent defence against that would be to bring the tailstock up for additional support - then the pressure would keep it firmly in the morse taper..

Cheaper than 42 quid from D&M ?

I'd still spend the extra and get a scroll chuck you can get a Nova G3 for under a ton.

Nothing wrong with Tommy Bar's ! I have a RP3000 scroll, and I can use mine one handed now ( been using it a year though )

Knobs can be turned between centre, you wouldn't have to use a chuck. The Jacobs chuck only has 3 jaws and apart from the problem that Chas mentioned it's grip can slip on wood IME.

Hi Matt

I have had a RPX3000 for a while now and have only recently superceded it with a SuperNova2. The 3000 is more fiddly than a scroll chuck and has less jaw travel but is entirely usable. I am in fact looking at using it for a part formed piece I was given that doesn't match any of the jaw sizes on my Supernova2.

Depending on the price it may be a good first time buy as it comes with a range of jaws, faceplate, pin chuck and screw chuck, most of which are extras with any scroll chuck.

You will need to check the spindle thread size as already mentioned.

Hope this helps,

Mike C
