Record Power RSBG8 - Balancing

I was given one of these as a gift a while back and have only just got around to setting it up. And in doing so, have noticed that the white wheel is massively out of balance. I'm pretty sure its the wheel at fault as if I take it off (leaving the grey wheel on), there is no vibration. I've also swapped wheels/flanges between the sides, and the issue still only appears on the white wheel.

I've used the dressing tool to flatten the front, and now that runs true, but the main issue is the sides, when spinning it by hand, and placing something on the side of the wheel to track it, the gap expands and contracts by around 4mm

I'd ideally just send it back, but I don't have the receipt. I've contacted Record and am waiting on their reply, but I don't think they'll do anything to help.

So now I'm looking at getting a new wheel.

I've only found them in a few places, but I'm looking at around £35 plus PP

So am looking into cheaper alternatives. I don't want to sacrifice quality, so am thinking of just going with a normal 20mm width. so 200mm diameter, 20mm width, and 16mm bore.

Axminster only do a 15mm bore
I've found some from MachineMart, but they're only £8. So I'm guessing quality won't be great.

Most of the Record equipment has a 5 year guarantee. How old is yours?

Sorry for the late reply. The grinder is under a year old, but I have no proof as I don't have the recipt.

Luckily, as a good will gesture, Record have agreed to send me out a replacement wheel

best of luck with the replacement. Unfortunately I had a similar experiance and to be fair, RP sent out two replacements but neither gave a level of balance I thought was reasonable so ended up with a Crusen which is A1 (but at a price of course).

I think there is advice out there on balancing re turning the stone etc but the issue with the stones I had was that the inner dished piece was not concentric with the bore so no amount of trueing the outer diameter would ever have helped.

Best of luck, home the QC has improved for you but it may not be you. (Do you know anyone with a DTI?)

Well that hasn't filled me with confidence . Unfortunaltey, they're out of stock of the wheel until December, so it will be a month before I find out. Which wheel were you having the issue with? just the white? or both?

Or one that engineers use, any heavy spot goes to the bottom everytime. and mark it or gradually weight it and when perfect you can weigh the lead and tell RP how much out their grinding wheel is.

As I posted above. It's out of balance on the sides, as though the center hole isn't perpendicular.

Did you manage to solve this and balance the wheel? I've got a chepo grinder (basically a motor on a stand) and have exactly that problem.

I don't think it's the wheel as that was new and of reasonable quality.

Looking closly at the shaft, there is a small recess against the collar. The cupped washers that came with the grinder have a cetral hole 1/2" (12.7mm) that matches the shaft, not the recess. As a result the wheel never sits straight and wobbles like hell.

4mm is a lot, have you tested the other wheel on that side (to prove it is not the shaft or cup washers) is the wheel loose on the spindle can it be shimed to straighten it up a bit? A new wheel might be the simple and safest answer.

I contacted Record about it when I posted this, and it took a good 4 months for them to get a new wheel out to me .... apparently they had none in stock all that time???

Anyway - I ended up using a different grinder and have still yet to try the new wheel they sent me as I prefer the other grinder anyway.

Mine was definately a dodgy wheel issue though, as the other wheel on both sides worked fine.
