Hi,

I recently acquired a record 050c plane, lovely condition. very happy with it, until I lost the two machine sdrews that lock the main cutting body onto the two bars.. no idea how, but they're gone so now it's impossible to use as the main body of it slides along the bar..

I went to good old B&Q and guessed at 4mm machine screws but they're no good. They appear to the correct diameter, but the threads don't like each oither. Any ideas on where I can get some replacements or just generic machine screws that will fit?

Thanks

I have got one of those. It is an odd thread but the same is used for some of the other record plough planes if that helps.
I expect it is something like a whitworth thread or some other old school bolt.
I expect someone wise will be along shortly. I will have a look later for you in the garage and see what thread it appears to be.

Thanks, I have no idea what I'm looking for! if anyone knows what kind of screw I'm looking for It'd be much appreciated.

Fortunately mine, 050C, was not in the garage. I bought mine in the early seventies and it has a blue plastic handle, I say this in case yours is possibly older. However to the matter in hand.
The screw diameter measures 4.6mm, now this could well be 3/16" which is 4.8mm. Unfortunately the pitch of the thread is 28 tpi. Whitworth is 24 tpi and BSF is 32 tpi. The nearest I could find on http://www.gewinde-normen.de/en/index.html is an exact match for a Sewing Machine thread, just in case that helps.

Best of luck.

I have an old ish incomplete record. I can send it to you for P+P if you want, can;t guarantee it has what you want but it maybe of use. Will PM you a number as I'm very off-grid during the week.

That's interesting Xy , mine has the blue handle and I mic - ed the diameter and thread checked it to get that 3/16 Whit 24 tpi ... don't say they changed 'em part way through that model ... that would be annoying.

Richard, It's beginning to look like the old ' See if you can find anything that fits '. I suppose even back then it could well have been a case of using an off-the-shelf part rather than something 'special', for cheapness. I must admit I was suprised that mine was not Whitworth.

A place to try is to visit the Stanley web site, look at spares pages and see if they are available. Certainly screws are available for most planes so why not a 50C.

'Cos it's a Record...? Although Record do have form for "doing a stanley" and using non-standard threads such as 3/16" with a thread of 28tpi. Generally a case of going down the "breaking for spares" route as suggested - or re-tapping to a larger, off the shelf, bolt size.

Thanks guys, might just have to buy another then sell mine as spares of vice versa..

Anyone know what the differences are between the 050c and the 044c?

A highly technical engineering trick is to roll a thin piece of plasticine, stick firmly to a thin rod or strong slither of wood and take an impression of the thread inside. This gives an external thread to gage.
Or as Alf says you could drill them out and tap them as something to coincide with an available bolt.

Off the top of my pain-medicated head, I believe it's much the same as the 044 vs 050 - the former is just a plough plane (grooves with the grain) while the latter is a light combination plane, tackling cross-grain work and beading. I would hazard a guess that the nuts and (more importantly) the bolts are much of a muchness.

Cheerup347,
Sorry for mistaking your Record for a Stanley I guess I must have skimmed the message a bit too fast there.

My own solution would be to measure the hole diameter including threads and then to drill it out and replace with a metric thread and modern machine screw.

My earlier try at recommending the Stanley site was based on the way Record copied many of the Stanley standards. That spares catalogue contains a part which is 3/16 in x 28 tpi as used in the equivalent Stanley gadget(s). Maybe not such a crazy idea.

Eoin, A re-threaded hole is possible, but I've had mine since new, £8.60, so I know this has not had that treatment. Strangely the bolts holding the spurs in place are 3/16" Whitworth as are the Thumb screws locking the adjustable fence in place.
One of life's little mysteries.
Personally I'd re-thread the holes at 6mm, 5mm would work but the thread might not be clean.
