I've had for a while now a pair of old 12mm bevel edged chisels that I reground on the Tormek to make a pair of skews. I made the original octagonal handles in teak, but they were too large and never looked quite 'right', so yesterday I made another pair of matched handles for them:

The blades are not a matched pair (one is and old Sorby and the other has no id at all :? ) but in their new handles I think they look a bit smarter. Timber is a rosewood and the finish is a couple of coats of oil followed by some wax over the top. If you have a lathe, for the price of a of ferule (40p from PFT) and a decent bit of timber about the right size for a handle they are dead easy to make...full instructions can be found on Alf's site here I've just made an additional deep 'V' cut 'twixt the octagonal blank and the roundy bit which I think makes them look better still...well worth doing IMHO to smarten up a pair of tatty old (but decent) blades - Rob

Hi Rob,

Where did you get your ferrules? pft?

Axminster don't sell them anymore and craft supplies wanted £5 for delivery!

CHeers :D

Plumbing section in Wickes or B&Q....look for the copper piping. sometimes you can get brass but not often but copper works just as well and is a lot cheaper.

Alternatively look for old really naff chisels etc in bootsales etc. blades and handles are shot but furrules OK and they go for pence

Cheers for the tip, i have already made some turning tools with copper ferrules, and have a length suitable for bigger chisels. However i want to re-handle some smaller chisels.

I was wanting to take some old chisels and make them look like LN's

Thats why i want proper brass ferrules.

Sean - PFT is 'Penny Farthing Tools' in Salisbury, just some of the stuff they sell. I also saw some brass ferules on sale on the Ashley Isles stand at Yandles last year so might be worth an enquiry. I have made handles with copper pipe but they don't look right, brass I think looks much better - Rob

Sean - several holes of different diameters need to be drilled in the handle when it's on the lathe depending on the shape and length of the of the tang. The 'lines' on the handle can be done using a skew turning chisel which makes a finer cut - Rob

Sean - use the skew chisel instead of the wire to make a finer line and also use the same tool to make the 'V' cut between the octagon and the turned bit, if you decide to include that bit - Rob
