I too have had a lot of success with Fischer Nylon UX Universal Plugs

I often use the 6x35mm plugs, and I've never had a problem fixing them into stone, brick and plasterboard.

On existing holes use a water based adhesive like "no more nails" to stick your plugs in. Blow the holes clean of dust first.

Handy hint. Use a kids large bore drinking straw (as obtained at MacDonalds) to blow out the hole.

if the holes already drilled and the plug is turning remove it and shape a wooden plug and hammer it in the rougher the shape the better got me out of lots of trouble also a lot cheaper than buying different sized plugs

These are pretty darn good as well, expensive, but worth it: http://www.toggler-uk.com/alligator/tog ... -pack.html these are pretty much the only plugs I have come across that work in plasterboard as well, although you do need metal toggles for heavy stuff. Finally, as already pointed out, the size of the pre drilled hole is all important keep it small as you can and still manage to bang the fixing in.

One thing to look out for is that many fixings etc are actually too good for the substrate, especially old victorian bricks, which are notoriously powdery - when they expand, they can fragment the material surrounding the hole and the fixing wont have anything to grip to.

And like the other posters, some resin or gripfill also helps in the hole.
