if you have a hand plane you could do it that way, have a look at Paul Sellers wall clock build he make one just using his No4 plane. ( he does make it look easy though)

I always used to do these with a router, however I now use a hand plane. It's not hard to do. I either use a no. 4 or if I want a step then I make 4 shallow saw cuts and then use my rebating block plane. With the router or table saw it is easy to be a bit off so the mitres don't point to the corners, with a hand plane you can take another pass and correct any deviation. Always go across the grain first top and bottom then any break out will be removed when you do the sides with the grain. As with all hand plane work it must be really sharp.

Do it with a hand plane, it's fun managing it so that each corner has a perfect 45 degree mitre and so that the chamfered section is dead flat in both directions without a bump in the middle.

One thing to remember, when you're laying it out use a pencil line not a knife line, a knife line won't get removed in planing so it'll remain as an ugly scratch.

Good luck.

well i cheated ..i guess
used the router hand held ( no table) unfortunately
used router fence to thin the timber to fit grooved box sides
then a V groove router bit ..again with fence to put a chamfer on it
I know the hinge should be inside and not outside
but it is an engraved hinge and I decided it would be wasted if not on show

we all have to make a choice...right or wrong
