well folks after much deliberation on how to cut that quilted maple slab i decided to do some box blanks from the knot end a bowl blank from the centre and that leaves an offcut to decide on later

this is what it looked like

overall i'm pleased with the figure of the maple but i think it would be better shown of on a platter.

Very nice looking bowls George :D
i see what you mean about showing the figure off on the Maple with a platter but i think gives a good effect in bowl form.
Love the colour of the Walnut, but it looks as though yiu have some big bugs in your shop.................Looks like a big bite as been taken out with that inclusion

 it does look like a bite on the overhead shot doesn't it

maybe i could make that a unique selling feature?????

Think you may have something with the platter thoughts George, Although the bowl shows the spectacular figuring, the rim edge does seem a bit of a detraction from the flow and leaves the bowl figuring only visible when empty.
I would certainly be tempted to resaw to make two platters on any other similar section

What a lovely piece of wood that quilted maple slab is - and a couple of superbe bowls too.

I think the bug that took a bite out the walnut one has very big teeth for a bug... :D

Seems strange having you making bowls George, though theyb are of your usual quality. That quilted maple is gorgeous, only see it on the american forum usually.

George, was the walnut from a roughed out green log or a standard blank\plank?

it came from a plank Tom- dont know whereabouts though as it was a piece that was from a job lot of walnut bits i got.

They both look really nice, Very eyecatching
The quilting looks fantastic, very 3D.
When you put your original post about buying the timber I went to have a look at the sellers other items. They sell some nice looking timbers,
a board like yours without the knot went for 135
